Francisco Márquez was born in Valencia (Spain) and received his Bachelor and Master´s degree in Biochemistry and Chemistry at the Universidad de Valencia in 1988 and 1989, respectively, and his Doctor´s degree in Chemistry at the Universidad de Valencia in 1992. He spent two years from 1990 as Director of the laboratories of Futura Medical S.A. and one year as researcher at Varian Iberica Laboratories. From 1994 he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Polytechnic University of Valencia. In 2001 he was an Associate Professor at Universidad Jaime I, and subsequently he moved to the School of Natural Sciences and Technology at University of Turabo (currently Universidad Ana G. Mendez-Gurabo Campus) in Puerto Rico, USA, where is now Full Professor of chemistry. He has been Visiting Professor in several universities, most recently at Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain). His research interests are mainly directed toward photophysics of organic compounds in confined spaces, hydrogen technology, photodegradation processes, synthesis and applications of nanotubes and nanowires, and most recently the development of new electrodes for Li-ion batteries. He is a coauthor of over 110 scientific publications and 11 patents, and Editor-in-Chief of several journals, including Advances in Energy Research and International Research Journal of Pure and Applied Chemistry, among others, and member of the Editorial Board of more than 30 scientific journals.

Professor Der-Jang LIAW, Polymer Science Doctor (Ph.D. Polymer), is currently a Chair professor of Chemical Engineering at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST). He holds his Master and Ph.D degrees in polymer science at Osaka University (Japan) and published about 360 SCI papers (h-index = 44 from ISI Web of Knowledge), 180 conference papers and 60 patents. In 2009, he was a recipient of the International Award from the Society of Polymer Science, Japan along with Prof. J. M. J. Frechet (USA) and Prof. K. Muellen (Germany). He received the Outstanding Polymer Academic Research Prize in 2012 and Lifetime Achievement Prize from The Polymer Society of Taiwan in 2013. He has been a fellow of The Polymer Society of Taiwan since 2014 and has been Academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering since 2011.
Prof. Liaw's research laboratory mainly focuses on the synthesis of new polymeric materials and precision polymerization. • Pioneered ad established a novel muscle xenograft model for human skeletal muscle diseases, including FacioScapuloHumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD), Duchene Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), and Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM), to create a patient specific animal model for the study of disease mechanism, muscle regeneration and the evaluation of different therapeutics.
• Characterized the xenograft model specifically for FSHD on histopathological, physiologic and molecular levels.
• Evaluated multiple therapeutics, including myostatin and TGFβinhibitors, Adeno Associated Virus (AAV) and antisense oligonucleotides in the muscle xenograft model.
• Examined muscle regeneration in vitro using primary myoblasts from FSHD patients and healthy donors.
• Studied disease pathogenesis and biomarker profiles using induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs) generated from primary cells from FSHD patients.
